"1st Time Offender" is the fourth story that is featured in the thirteenth episode of Season 3.

Plot[]

A juvenile delinquent named Troy Crane is arrested for stealing a gold watch, and is brought before Judge Daniel Waters. Troy is confidant that he will get off lightly because of his clean record, lucky medallion, and the testimony of his loving yet oblivious single mother, Mrs. Crane.

While testifying, Mrs. Crane describes her son as a good boy who will never act out again, and claims that the gold watch actually does belong to Troy. Mrs. Crane explains that she had been making payments on the watch for the last eight months, intending to get it as an eighteenth birthday present for Troy. Mrs. Crane had made the final payment on the watch shortly before it was taken by Troy, and has been in touch with the jewelry store owner, who has agreed to drop the charges against Troy so long as the glass display case that Troy had smashed to grab the watch is paid for by Mrs. Crane.

Judge Waters is swayed by Mrs. Crane's testimony, until Troy takes out his lucky medallion, the chain of which breaks, with the medallion moving on its own, as if pulled by an invisible force, whenever it is approached by Troy. When the medallion ends up at the foot of Judge Water's podium, Jude Waters has it brought to him by a bailiff, and as he inspects it, he realizes that the medallion is the same one that he had gifted to his wife, Mrs. Waters. Mrs. Waters was attacked two weeks ago by a mugger who tore the medallion from her neck so savagely that it left a permanent scar, and as Judge Waters recuses himself from the case, due to now being personally involved in it, he angrily remarks that Troy had everyone, including his own mother, fooled, and that he is going to be filing charges against Troy.

Troy is found guilty of felony assault and robbery, and is sentenced to the Youth Authority Farm in Bozeman, Montana, where he is visited every week by Mrs. Crane.
